European Senior Parliamentarians Identify with Gush Katif Expellees
MPs from Europe visit the Gush Katif Museum * "The Expulsion was a strategic mistake that granted victory to Islam"
Dozens of senior parliamentarians from across Europe, among them opposition faction heads and party leaders, visited the Gush Katif Museum in Yerushalayim during a trip to Israel. They were joined by Minister Ayoub Kara (Likud), and all together, lit Chanukah candles as a gesture of solidarity with the Jewish people.
As they toured the museum, the MPs remarked that Israel′s unilateral withdrawal from Gaza in 2005, termed the “Disengagement,” had been a mistake. The one-sided move, which followed years of terrorist attacks, was seen by radical Islamists as a victory for their ideology, they said.
The candles the MPs lit were held by a special menorah made of the spent casings of mortar shells that Gaza terrorists had fired at Israelis living in Gush Katif. The menorah was created by Gideon Rivlin, a Gush Katif resident and father of five who was later murdered in a terrorist attack.
Kara called on Israel to build close relationships with the MPs, members of Europe′s “new Right” that supports Israel and worries about extremist Islam. The “new Right” has shared interests with the Jewish people and the state of Israel, he said. "Twenty years ago we rang the alarm about this; today it is seen clearly in Europe. We should embrace these MPs warmly, in order to save Israel from its most bitter enemies."
Rabbi Sholom Dov Volpo, Chairman of SOS- Israel, read the first Rashi in the Torah aloud for the guests. Rashi, in his opening commentary, writes of our Divine and eternal right to the Land. Rabbi Volpo′s words were received with a warm round of applause. Rabbi Volpo added that the tragedy on the Carmel, driving thousands from their homes, is a punishment for the expulsion of thousands from their homes in Gush Katif. To this very day, they are bereft of homes and employment. He thanked the MPs who express solidarity with the Jewish Nation and the settlements of Yehuda and Shomron.
Tens of media persons covered the exciting event at the Gush Katif Museum.
