Careless Leaders and Careless Drivers

Rabbi Yosef Hartman

"I didn′t see the barrier, I didn′t hear the toot!" –that is what the stunned driver of the van said as he came back to the scene of the horrific fatal accident that killed an entire family from Beitar Ilit on the train tracks near Kibbutz Gat.

This sounds absurd to the Police Department traffic inspectors.  If the driver would have noticed the ′Decelerate′ traffic sign and the flashing lights in time, he would have braked before the terrible crash occurred. However, he wasn′t concentrating. He was busy talking.  If his ears were attuned to hear the alarm bell announcing the barrier′s closing, he would have stopped the tragic and blood curling accident.  The train conductor tooted his horn, but the driver′s ears were clogged, and then the terrifying collision happened.

The very same thing is happening with the keynoters in Israel.  They are galloping full speed ahead towards the long awaited ′peace′ with the PLO and the ′only solution′, according to their modus.  This solution entails the establishment of a terrorist state in the heart of our tiny country.  The warning horns are earsplitting, but their ears are clogged!  The barriers have been lowered already, but their eyes  are plastered closed.  They have lost their thread of concentration and busy with talk.

The sirens are wailing: STOP! KEEP AWAY! Our leaders, nevertheless, are running ahead, illogically, breaching the barriers on the way to that fatal collision with the terror automobile.  The barriers have been lowered on all fronts, but the keynoters  continue to grip the steering wheel and race forward, in an unfathomable fashion.

Please, please stop, before it is too late!
