MK Michael Ben Ari's Opening Speech 24 Shvat 5769 / 18/02/2009

As MK Michael Ben Ari was about to commence his speech, the Arab MKs left the plenum. MK Ben Ari commented, "'meharsayich umachrivayich mimech yetzeu' ('thy destroyers and they that made thee waste shall go forth from thee). This is a blessing".

The cries of the Vita Pri Hagallil workers reached the Heavens. On the very day that we gather here to celebrate the swearing in of the Knesset with pomp and finery, Chatzor Haglilit is wearing sackcloth and ashes. For some reason, this same scene, of families in the periphery losing their bread staff- their basic sustenance- gives us a sense of deja vu' . This happens again and again.

It is easy to blame the global financial crisis, and many other causes. This is only an excuse. I believe that the crisis is deeper than that.

What brought this crisis upon us are the mixed up priorities of the leadership in Israel. This crisis caused an educational and social crisis to follow.

This is the very same leadership that suffers from an unbridled obsession to run amok after the hallucinatory peace, but they have wreaked death, destruction, bereavement, suffering and dire financial damage too great to be assessed. Sinai and the oil fields were deserted in the name of peace; blooming settlements were destroyed.

They created a "Palestenian nation" and autonomy from naught, and it rose and rebelled against its' creator!

Since the time of the wretched Camp David accords, our security and financial woes have deepened and multiplied. We go from security crisis to financial crisis, and back again. Is there anyone who can estimate today how much the security fence – that is one big lie and betrayal- cost to this date?

Under the cloak of "security", a wall was stuck in the heart of the country, but please don't give away the secret: Kassam and Grad missiles know how to fly over the eight meter high fence!

Could someone estimate how much the delusionary expulsion cost us? How much will it cost us in the future? How much did the Operation Cast Lead cost, and how much will future operations cost?

My fellow honorable members of Knesset, the time has come to open a new front: "v'chay achicho imoch" (thy brother may live with thee). We must invest all our resources in order to turn the peripheries – the neighborhoods in the Galil, Golan, Negev, Yehuda and Shomron – into the center of the country!

Our future lies there- in the vast open lands of Eretz Yisroel outside the air conditioned offices of Gush Dan. The time has come to invest money in neighborhoods and employment, and not in delusionary peace processes.
